Slow burn

Pale pink against a red that won't sit still. The background was mixed and remixed until it stopped being a colour and started being heat — the orchids sit inside it rather than on top of it.

The freckling on the petals isn't painted stroke by stroke. It's flicked on with a toothbrush — pigment loaded onto the bristles and released across the surface. You get one attempt. The spray lands where it lands, and if the density is wrong the petal is finished and so is the painting. Phalaenopsis have exactly this kind of scatter in life, irregular and unrepeatable, and no brush can fake it.

I kept the flowers cool and let the ground do the burning.
